Agricultural Development in Taiwan – From Traditional to Modern

Release date / 2012-04-04

Concluding Remarks

1.“Land-to-the-tiller” reform, family farming, development of new varieties, modern production technologies, postharvest and food processing, marketing strategies, small and medium enterprises, and farmers associations all played major roles in agricultural modernization in Taiwan. Much of the development experience, especially modern production technologies, have been shared with many developing countries in the tropics through agricultural technical missions sent by Taiwan government.

2.Food security, food safety, green energy, climate change and carbon reduction have become global issues facing all nations. To tackle  these problems, regional and international cooperations should be strengthened for promoting high-value but enviromentally-friendly agriculture. In this regard, both public and private enterprises in Taiwan would be interested in participation.

3.AVRDC-The World Vegetable Center located in Taiwan and its Regional Center for Southeast Asia based in Thailand have been cooperating with most ASEAN nations in vegetable research and development since early 1980’s. If additional funding can be secured, AVRDC-The World Vegetable Center should also be able to assist in the development of high-value agriculture in the BIMP and IMT regions.
